Assessment and reporting
At our College, assessment is an important part of learning. It helps students understand their progress, develop their language skills and prepare for further study.
Assessment at SCL measures student performance and progress in relation to the course outcomes set by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). They provide students with opportunities to demonstrate their learning through four key language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Students also receive feedback throughout the year to help them improve their performance and build confidence in using their language.
How assessment works
Assessment at SCL is designed to:
- measure student learning and progress in their language course
- provide meaningful feedback to support improvement
- develop communication and intercultural understanding
- prepare students for the Record of School Achievement (ROSA) and Higher School Certificate (HSC).
Students are informed about assessment requirements at the start of the year and will receive a Notice of Assessment Task outlining key tasks and dates.
SCL formally reports student achievement to families and weekday schools twice a year. Reports provide information about student progress, achievement in assessment tasks and engagement in their language studies.
Assessment policies
There are different assessment requirements for each year group.
Student academic integrity and malpractice
SCL students are expected to demonstrate academic integrity in all assessment tasks. This means completing work honestly and acknowledging the work of others.
Malpractice includes, but is not limited to:
- plagiarism or copying another person’s work
- using unauthorised materials or assistance
- submitting work that is not their own
- cheating during an assessment task
Students who do not meet these expectations may receive penalties in line with SCL procedures and NESA requirements.
Our Academic Integrity and Malpractice Procedure outline how:
- we investigate concerns about malpractice
- students can appeal decisions related to malpractice.
Assessment support and forms
Students may need to apply for special consideration or submit an appeal in certain circumstances.
The following forms are available to support students:
- Request for Consideration Form - for missed assessment tasks
- Assessment Appeal Form - for appeal of task result
- Malpractice Appeals Form - for appeal against malpractice decision
These forms should be submitted in accordance with the procedures outlined in the relevant assessment policy. Students are encouraged to speak with their teacher if they require support.
